I. The development and application of internet technology will bring revolution to education industry. Education is responsible not only for improving comprehensive quality of the public, but also for inheriting and developing the nation's culture and social value. Human progress is accompanied with education development, and a nation's prosperity could not be accomplished without an advanced education system. Some of us deem human history as a war history, or history with various dynasties; nevertheless, it is technology that drives human history in each human progress and each stage of human society. Meanwhile, the innovation of technology leads the development of education system. Each innovation of technology not only adds new content to the education, but most importantly, brings new approaches for spreading knowledge. Paper, substituted the bamboo slip, became the knowledge carrier, and made knowledge delivery easier and faster; lithography made knowledge accessible to broader public; Broadcasting and television made one way long distance education possible. Computer and internet technology will end an era which books and paper are the major resources for knowledge and information, and it definitely brings revolutionary change to education industry. The internet makes people accessible to the schools, library, museum and other kinds of resources all round the world, and it also brings interactive remote education into reality. Education will be no longer limited to space, time frame, resources. II. The internet will promote our value of education which is "people as the foundation" or "people first". Education serves people. People is not only the object of education, but also the core for the whole education system, which means teachers should be student oriented, principal should be teacher oriented, government officials should be principal oriented, and eventually students after being educated should serve the society. The value of education should always go with "people first", and it could be break down to three stages based on difference stage of social development. They are to value life, to protect human dignity and to seek development. To value life is the initial stage. It's based on staying healthy in our material life and seek enhancement in our cultural or spiritual life. Internet not only creates material wealth, brings convenience to our lives, but also leave a great space for us to improve our spiritual life. People express their opinion more freely, maintain and enlarge their social network, become more interactive with government or administration with a great sense of participation. Internet also provides a effective media for all kinds of arts and cultures. It greatly improves our quality and significance of lives. To protect dignity, as the second stage, is a unique need for human being. There is no dignity without equality. We could observe value of equality through education. Under Chinese traditional education method, students have to follow whatever their educator tells them. Educator leads the education, and students have to take whatever pass on to them in a passive way. Through the tradition education system, students' creativity is killed. Internet may totally change the status. People are able to access to the same amount of resources no matter where you come from, how smart you are, what kind of character you have. Internet will accomplish equality to a great extent. To seek development is eventual stage for education. Internet provides limitless information and education resources. It brings more variety to the content and approaches to education. Students will be their own master, and make the best to develop their own potentials. III. Internet brings great challenge to the traditional education concept. Information technology brings immeasurable influence on education. It not only changes the teaching method, but most importantly it has a deep effect on the content, approaches, even the whole concept of education. We have to be ready for the upcoming education revolution in terms of mindset and practice. 1. The change of educational informationization concept for the society Quite a few countries put a great emphasis on education informationization, such as The strategic plan for Educational technology in the United States, the fifth and sixth generation computer utilized in education system in Japan, the Eureca plan for EU, Virtual university in Korea, Wise Island project in Singapore; Generally speaking, we haven't put enough emphasis on educational informationization, and we are still short of input to infrastructure, educational resources, and educators' training. If there is no internet connection, it will be like a university with no library; If there is no educational resource reserve, it will be just like a school with no teachers. 2. The transformation of schools With the coming era of educational informationization, it brings change to education in terms of the generation, speading and application of knowledge. Internet will weaken the function of knowledge spreading function. To some extent, the university will become a place for research or a place of knowledge generation. 3. The change of concept of teaching The educator will change from a teacher some what into coordinator or organizer in the education process in the new era. Meanwhile, the quality of teaching is not judged by schools in the traditional way, but evaluated by more general public on the internet. It will prevent practice fraud and academic corruption to a large extent. 4. The change in concept of study Educational informationization could not be simply defined as concept of internet. Students still need to be self conscientious of their own study on educator's guidance. Educational informationization will smash the traditional concept that " one can only study in the classroom; only teachers pass on knowledge; only grade tells ability;". Students obtain knowledge in a positive and selective way, which will trigger their creativity to a great extent. It will also help them to develop self study ability. Moreover, students need to have a clear mind of internet. Internet is a tool, it could be used for good or bad. Students need to shape the habit to utilize internet to access positive education resources rather than being addicted to internet games, porn and other negative information. IV. The influence of internet has beyond the education industry or the whole economy. It has become the fifth dimension that all nations will fight for. The innovations of technology are always dashing, but some of them pass by so quick in human history like shooting stars. Records has been a huge industry in the state in year 1985 with 24 billion US dollar market, but it simply disappeared in 5 years with substitution of tapes or CDs. Nowadays, the tape and CD market is shrinking as well. However, the influence of internet to human being is far reaching and way larger than the invention of movie, television, and lithography. Internet has a great influence on a nation's politics and economy, and it also affects our culture and social value, even the evolution of our language. Some developed countries, rely on their internet resources, penetrate their culture or social value through other countries, erode traditions in an invisible way. Hollywood movies, Japanese and Korean TV series has become so popular in China which possess over 5,000 years of history and over 1.3 billion population. A pop language on the internet will become a mostly used phrase within a few days. In the information era, if we lose the battle for internet resources, we will be dominated by others. Sovereignty was defined as three dimensions in the traditional way, territory land, territory water and territory sky. A few countries have begun to compete for the outer space. If we define the outer space as the fourth dimension, internet is definitely the fifth one for sovereignty, and we could even call it territory internet. It is intangible; however, each country will define their internet territory through intellectual property, culture, social value and technical barrier. The competition for internet territory among nations is actually a war without fire, and become more ferocious with each passing day. We have to face the challenge and make all our efforts to harvest the victory. |
