Internet banners will soon be put under regulations in east China's Zhejiang Province, following similar practices in the Chinese cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
Sources said that due to the difficulty of supervising online advertising, China's law-enforcement body has not yet established strict regulations.
Shen Shengwen, an official with the Zhejiang Provincial government, said that some Internet advertising companies run banners without properly checking the credibility of the advertisements' contents.
Shen said that Internet ads containing distorted, misleading and even illegal information have greatly endangered customers' interests.
Since China's existing Advertisement Law fails to provide effective supervision in the online environment, the Zhejiang local government has had to formulate additional standards to regulate online banners as well as safeguard customers' interests.
Sources said that the newly launched move aims to put Internet banners on the right track instead of inhibiting the development of the new phenomenon.
