Shanghai International Studies University High-level Talent Recruitment 2018

  Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), founded in December 1949, is a key university in the lists of “211 Project” universities and of “Double First-Class” university project, directly under the PRC Ministry of Education and co-sponsored by Shanghai Municipal Government. We’re the first Chinese university having entered into partnerships with the United Nations Headquarters and Offices, the European Commission and the European Parliament. We have a top place in the subject assessment ranking by the Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Center the Ministry of Education and the QS World University Rankings.

  Disciplinary leadership in foreign languages and literatures (China’s First-class Discipline). SISU is the seat of Asia-Pacific working group of the International Conference of Universities and Institutes for Translation and Interpreting (CIUTI). We have Asia's leading school of translation (GIIT) which has the highest rating by the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) and is the only Chinese (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) professional conference interpreter training institution that ranks top 15 in the world and comes first for the English-Chinese pair. SISU graduated the first Ph. D. students in foreign languages and literatures in China, and now offers 32 languages, including the world's major modern languages and quite a few classical languages. We are actively preparing to offer courses and programs on new strategic languages and consolidating the repertoire of non-common language programs. Our Research Center for Foreign Language Strategies is one of the first research bases and think-tanks for the State Language Commission. We publish 12 academic periodicals, including 7 CSSCI journals. Among them, the Journal of Foreign Languages is one of the first Chinese academic journals that have received grants from the China National Social Sciences Fund. As a Modern Language Association (MLA) journal, it is the only journal on foreign language studies that has ranked among top 30 academic journals of China. Our publishing house, Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, is a leading foreign-language publisher of China.

  Distinction in regional and state studies. SISU has always enjoyed disciplinary distinction in languages and literatures. We now offer five major disciplines: literature, pedagogy, economics, management and law, and are authorized to grant Ph. D. degrees and run post-doctoral research stations under two first-level disciplines (foreign languages & literatures and political science). We have quite a few key humanities and social sciences centers at both the national and municipal levels for Middle Eastern studies, European studies, Russian studies, British studies, Asian and African studies and Latin American studies. In 2016, the Middle East Studies Institute, the Research Center for Global Public Opinion of China and the Research Center for Foreign Language Strategies became the first batch of CTTI think tanks. We are now planning to establish a Shanghai Institute of Global Governance and Regional Studies, which will be an innovative platform for building global knowledge system, conducting language policy planning and international public opinion research, and therefore provide intellectual support for global governance and national development.

  A global network of open education. Currently, we have partnerships with more than 360 universities and educational institutions 56 countries and regions as well as numerous international organizations. Nearly 43% of our students have overseas experience, and we have cooperative projects for graduate education with universities in Germany, France, Spain and many other countries. On the other hand, about 4,000 students from over 100 countries around the world come to SISU as international students every year, putting SISU in a top position on the list of Chinese universities for international student attraction. We have co-organized international seminars with academic institutions from the United States, Canada, Lebanon, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Japan, South Korea and many other countries. We are running an “external expertise introduction” scheme, which aims to build an internationalized faculty and promote international academic partnerships. Nearly 80% of our faculty have overseas academic background or experience and foreign members now account for 1/4 of our faculty. SISU has co-sponsored Confucius Institutes with local universities in Italy, Japan, Peru, Hungary, Spain, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Canada and New York, and runs an education center in Mexico. Our footprint is all over Asia, Africa, Europe, North America and South America, which is part of our commitment to promoting the Chinese culture and communicating with world civilizations.

  I.Categories of talent wanted

  1.Top talent in foreign languages and literatures

  Our discipline in foreign languages and literatures is a key discipline funded by Shanghai Class-I Academic Peak Scheme, and our English Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature and Arabic Language and Literature are key disciplines at the national level. We now offer 10 national specialty programs. We now teach English, German, French, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, Korean, Persian, Thai, Vietnamese, Bahasa Indonesia, Swedish, Dutch, Hebrew, Ukrainian, Turkish, Hindi, Hungarian, Urdu, Uzbek, Malay, Swahili, Javanese, Pashto, as well as Chinese.

  2.Multi-disciplinary talent

  We are now preparing to establish a Shanghai Institute of Global Governance and Regional Studies, for which we need multi-disciplinary and multi-lingual talent in regional and state studies, global knowledge and discourse studies, international & global public opinion research, foreign language strategy studies, intercultural studies, and research on comparative education, international education, international finance, international law and comparative politics.

  3.Strategic non-common language research and teaching talent

  Strategic languages include without limitation to Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Kazakh, Uzbek, Swahili, Pashto, Kurdish, Urdu, Danish, Norwegian, Latin, Malay, Cambodian, Burmese, Hausa, Amharic and Lao.

  II.Position opening

  To further optimize our faculty mix, enhance our first-class discipline in foreign languages and literatures, consolidate our national think-tanks and key research bases and labs, we have introduced a "Zhiyuan Scholar" scheme. Under this special scheme, we will expand our top talent recruitment and energize talent development according to our general development goals and disciplinary development plans.

  Currently, we want:

  1.Distinguished scholars: With doctoral degrees; Under 55 years of age; Having full professorship; Domestic and international academic distinction; Major results recognized by peers from home and abroad.

  2.Excellent scholars: With doctoral degrees; Under 55 years of age; Having associate professorship; Domestic and international academic excellence; With domestic leadership and international influence.

  3.Young scholars: With doctoral degrees; Under 45 years of age; Having associate professorship from first-class Chinese universities or research institutions; With high-level academic performance and innovation results.

  4.Endowed professors: Under 65 years of age; Having full professorship from first-class Chinese universities or research institutions, or tenured associate professorship or higher titles from internationally renowned or first-class foreign universities; Having leadership in an academic field and results recognized by peers from home and abroad.

  5.Chair professors: Under 70 years of age; Having full professorship (Ph. D. supervisor) from first-class Chinese universities or research institutions, or tenured associate professorship or higher titles from internationally renowned universities or first-class foreign universities; Having leadership in an academic field with prominent results recognized by peers from home and abroad.

  6.Innovation teams: Core members are under 55 years of age in principle, and team members are under 45 years of age on average. A team should have one leader and at least 5 core members. Among them, the team leader and at least 3 core members should have full professorship from renowned Chinese universities and research institutions, or tenured associate professorship or higher titles from internationally renowned universities or first-class foreign universities. The team should have leadership in an academic field with prominent results recognized by peers from home and abroad.

  III. Compensations

  1.Basic salary: Competitive annual salary scheme designed according to specific disciplinary and task requirements and the specific type of talent, and supplemented with a reasonable promotion mechanism.

  2.Allowances and other benefits: Public house rental and commercial housing subsidy, and differentiated settlement subsidies for talent of different kinds; Assistance with household registration according to the human resource policies of Shanghai Municipal Government.
