  We are looking for a skilled lab technician to join a small electronics, physics and IT team which supports the activities of one of the newest Universities in China.

  Job Description

  Job Title:        Technician; Physics/Electronics & IT Support

  Reports To:       Head of Electronics Department

  Organisation Unit:    Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

  Start Date:       Feb/March 2007

  Overall Purpose of the Job:

  To provide a physics/electronics technician service to staff and students in an English speaking environment in order to support research and teaching requirements. To assist with the;

  ●        maintenance and repair of physics and electronics teaching equipment,

  ●        development of new experimental equipment,

  ●        selection of new experimental equipment.

  Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities or Duties:

  The technician will specialise in Physics and Electronics as the primary function of the job, but will be expected to work in IT Support as directed.

  (Note: XJTLU is a dynamic, rapidly evolving university; the range of duties etc. set out below is indicative and not prescriptive. The person appointed will be expected to show flexibility and adaptability in meeting the developing needs of the University).

  General Responsibilities

  ●        To adhere personally to all Health and Safety policies and procedures in all working areas and to take responsibility for others working either as students or junior staff; also to advise others in the area of their individual responsibilities and to report any concerns to an appropriate person.

  ●        To multi-skill using other subsidiary skills within the limits of technical competence and within the expectations for the grade.

  ●        To work effectively to utilise the resources available to ensure operational and cost efficiency.

  ●        To undertake training in all aspects of the work and taking responsibility for keeping up-to-date in the technical skills required for the post.

  ●        Other duties commensurate with the grade and position as defined by the Head of Department or his/her Officers including support to other colleagues in the University when required, such as during times of peak workflow, holidays, sickness, etc.

  PHYSICS AND ELECTRONICS SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  ●        To repair, service and maintain specialist laboratory equipment for research and teaching using a full range of workshop procedures, in workshops laboratories and administrative areas when required.

  ●         To calibrate equipment and to carry out defined tests to ensure their safety in workshops, laboratories and administrative areas when required.

  ●        To construct and test prototype equipment from diagrams.

  ●        To advise on the electrical safety of experimental rigs.

  ●        To ensure that the working area is kept in an orderly and tidy condition and that the necessary consumables are available for current and future known work.

  ●        To issue equipment to students and record its return.

  ●        To advise students on their experimental work.

  ●        To grade the laboratory worksheet and reports submitted by students.

  IT SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  Although IT knowledge is desirable it is not essential for the role as full training will be provided.

  ●        To utilise specialised technical knowledge and experience in own area that will meet the needs of staff and students in their research and learning.

  ●        To service, repair and maintain specialist IT equipment for research, teaching and administrative purposes.

  ●        To install and check computer software and networks as appropriate.

  ●        To install and commission networks.

  ●        To advise on the purchase of computers and peripherals.

  ●        To liaise with Faculty/University staff and outside bodies to resolve problems.

  ●        To train or instruct other staff in the use of IT equipment and software as required and within the limits of technical competence.

  Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  ●        Appropriate qualifications in a science or technology based subject, typically a Masters Degree in Physics or Electronics Engineering.

  Or considerable work experience in a relevant technical or scientific role.

  ●        Proficiency in English to at least Certificate of College English Test – Band 6 (CET6) or equivalent.

  ●        Self motivation and flexible attitude to work, together with the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and with staff at all levels.

  ●        Capacity to prioritise work and to respond calmly and effectively under pressure whilst working to deadlines or during crises.

  ●        An understanding of the basic technical and scientific principles necessary for the work.

  ●        Good analytical and problem solving abilities.

  ●        Good time-management skills and organisational abilities.

  ●        The ability to work collaboratively within a group and also to work independently.

  ●        Communication skills appropriate to the work to be undertaken.

  Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Experience.

  ●        Knowledge of Windows XP in a networking environment and other Microsoft applications

  ●        The ability to follow and work to circuit diagrams and isometric drawings.

  ●        Knowledge of simulation software (PSPICE and Matlab)

  ●        The ability to repair a wide range of physics, electrical and electronic scientific equipment.
