China Builds Reference Station on Mt. Qomolangma
2005-05-16

China has built the country's highest GPS continuously operating reference station (CORS) in Dingri in Tibet Autonomous Region on May 11.

The station, built at Dingri's meteorological station at an altitude of over 4,300 meters, is capable of real-time continuous operation.

As the second of its kind in Tibet, the station is the first such cooperation between The State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping and China Meteorological Administration.

The station can provide accurate geographic information for survey and mapping departments as well as important basic data for height survey on Mount Qomolangma, said Zhang Yanping, deputy director of the National Geomatics Center of China.

Li Feng, head of the Department of High-altitude Exploration of the Department of Observation and Telecommunication under China Meteorological Administration, said that China will establish a permanent automatic comprehensive meteorological station at the base camp at 5,200 meters high on Mount Qomolangma. With world advanced equipment, the station will collect and deliver real-time data, which will be of great significance to improving the accuracy of the weather forecast on the Qomolangma area.
