The Top Ten Chinese Medical Technological Reports of the Year 2,000 were announced. The activity was sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the State Traditional Chinese Medicine Administration Bureau.

They are the following:

1. Chinese scientists successfully finished their part of work mapping one per cent of the human genome sequence in the Human Genome Project, which aims to map out all human genes.

2. China made important advances in the research of genome sequencing. The Shanghai-based Southern Centre of the Chinese Human Genome Project, led by Chen Zhu and Jin Qi, another Chinese geneticist, finished gene variation research and decoding morbid genes such as the leukaemia cell and bacillus dysenteriae, the latter being the first and biggest complete genome sequence mapped from an organism in China.

3. Researchers of the Second Medical University of Shanghai, led by Cao Yilin duplicated human cartilage, cranial bones and tendons with tissue project research technology.

4. Research team headed by academician Han Jisheng from the Neuroscience Institute of Peking University discovered the cause of individual differentiation in acupuncture anesthesia (pain relief). They discovered that CCK-8, a chemical element in the body, is a very important factor and decides the effectiveness of acupuncture and morphine in stopping pain.

5. Achievement in the standardizatin of the quality criteria for Chinese traditional medicine. This is a step forward in the modernization of traditional Chinese traditional medicine. This is a step forward in the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine.
Experts from all over China did quality criteria research on 71 common Chinese traditional medicines and set the quality and quality measuring standards for traditional Chinese medicine.
The Qinghai Jinke Tibetan Medicine Group and the Qinghai Plateau Medicine Institute studied the effectiveness, function mechanism and toxicology, using both traditional and modern physical research methods. This is of great significance for the research, development and application of traditional medicines.

6. Chinese anti-malaria drugs got invention patents in more than 60 countries and approval to enter the markets of European and American countries. The anti-malaria research team from the Chinese military Medical Academy was granted the title of "technological Creation Model" for the invention.

7. Achievement in the research of immunology
The Immunology Education and Research Office of the Fourth Military Medical university cloned a human immune molecule - blood platelet/T cell activation antigen (PTA1) and illustrated its function, winning the first CD serial number for China.

8. China has conducted more research on the treatment of cranial and heart illnesses at community level.

9. An oral cholera vaccine and dysentery vaccine researched by the Chinese Military Medical Institute was granted a national first class new drug certificate.

10. The Nanfang (Southern) Hospital affiliated to the No 1 Military Medical University successfully finished the first case of the alien transplant of both forearms for a patient in Asia.
