2001-10-29

Merger of Zhongshan University and the Zhongshan Medical Sciences University was completed Friday.

The two universities were both named after the great Chinese revolutionary pioneer Sun Zhongshan, or Dr. Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925) , the founder of the Kuomintang Party and the Republic of China. Both the mainland and Taiwan revere Sun as the father of modern China.

Zhongshan University was set up by Dr. Sun for training people to aid the revolution and China's social development.

The new Zhongshan University has 33,000 students and 631 professors. Among the professors are three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and as many academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
